On March 7th, Florence hosted the first edition of the Local Erasmus Games (L.E.G.), an event that brought together eighty international students competing in a multi-sport tournament featuring five-a-side football, basketball and volleyball. An intense day, filled with enthusiasm and team spirit, that turned sport into a natural bridge between different cultures. What made the initiative truly special was its deeply voluntary nature: the LEG were conceived, organised and managed entirely by the young members of ESN ASI Florentia ETS, an association that has long been a point of reference for Erasmus students. A group of volunteers who, driven by passion and civic spirit, built a one-of-a-kind event in the Florentine landscape, capable of uniting sport, culture and integration. Equally fundamental was the support of the Department for Sport, Youth Policies and Popular Traditions, which recognised the social value of the project. The Local Erasmus Games are part of ESN's broader commitment to social inclusion and the themes of health and well-being, promoting sport as a tool for community building and personal growth. The participation of the Italian Red Cross, which offered the students a BLS (Basic Life Support) course, further enriched the experience by adding an educational and civic responsibility dimension. The winning teams will now have the opportunity to represent Florence at the National Erasmus Games — an event that brings together over 300 students from across Italy — wearing the colours of their second home: the city where they are living their mobility experience. A moral emerges from the voices, the glances and the emotions of the students who experienced the L.E.G. from within: a pass made well, a hand extended when someone falls, a word of encouragement spoken in an accent different from your own. It is in these moments that the students came to understand how easy it is to feel close to one another, even when you come from countries far apart.

Francesco Cisonno
